The Politics of Plaid: Tartan and Gender in the British Empire

  • Society for the Museum of Original Costume 1489 McRae Avenue Vancouver, BC, V6H 1T7 Canada (map)

During the 19th and 20th centuries the Scottish tartan began to be used in new ways in the British Isles. Join Karina Greenwood for a lively discussion that covers the use of the tartan by the Scottish suffragettes, Queen Victoria, and the Highland Regiments to better understand its journey as a gendered and imperial cloth.

Our curator, Ivan Sayers, will introduce this fascinating talk and has curated a small collection of tartan pieces for display at this event.
