Timeless in Silk

Timeless in Silk - The Art of Japanese Kimono Fabrics

Japanese culture specialist and guest SMOC lecturer Maiko Behr provides an introduction to the dazzling diversity of traditional kimono silks, offering an intimate look into minute details of the production process. Featuring examples from the antique kimono collection and original fashions of Vancouver collector/designer Fumie Von Dehn, this special show will trace Japanese silk through centuries-old techniques of craftsmanship to Western-inspired designs of the early 20th century. Live models will present contemporary designs that reveal a deep understanding of and respect for these materials while giving them new life.

This time only, the rare garments seen on stage will also be offered for sale. The show will be accompanied by a pop-up trunk sale of exclusive vintage fabrics and fashions, sourced from one-of-a-kind hand-dyed, hand-woven, and hand-painted Japanese kimono silks from the 1890s to 1960s. Please note that purchases will be by cash or cheque only.

Please note: Doors open at noon!
